Welcome back all of you to Botany Downs School, with a very special welcome to the many new children joining our community today. We hope your school days with us will be very happy and rewarding ones.
Our school newsletters come home at the start of every school week, with the eldest or only child. Newsletters are easily our most important way of communicating with you, so please look out for them. Newsletters are also posted on our school website (www.botanydowns.school.nz) Don’t forget that you can join us on Facebook.

Scholastic Book Fair
We will be holding a Book Fair this week, on Tuesday and Wednesday 2.30pm-3.30pm, in the hall.
Please take this opportunity to support the school (we receive commission on sales, which will provide Literacy resources) as well as picking up some great Christmas presents and summer holiday reading for your kids! Eftpos available.

Junior Athletics Day
Another successful Junior Athletics day was held on Friday. Without the dedication from the staff at each activity the day would not have been possible, so a big thank you to all staff who helped out.
A special thank you to all the parents who braved the rather chilly wind and showed support for their children.
Well done to all the children who took part in the day’s activities showing great sportsmanship and determination. Samantha du Plessis

PTA Projects
Thank you to our PTA for running another great school disco on Friday night.
Just letting you know about some major projects the PTA is heavily involved in:
• Upgrade of the Junior Courtyard. Much of the fundraising efforts of the PTA over the last 12 months are being directed towards a major upgrade of the area between the staffroom and the junior classes-where the little ones have their lunch. This area is rather tired, and a small subcommittee has been hard at work planning a significant modernisation. Stage 1 begins in January when all the concrete will be ripped up and new concrete laid-a very significant undertaking. Special thanks from the PTA to all those parents who have contributed towards raising money for this. We value your support.

Summer Uniform
All children are officially required to wear the summer uniform from now on, including wearing a school sunhat. Please note that in summer all children are to wear plain black flat sandals, not shoes. Thank you for your assistance with this.

House PE Shirts
As mentioned in previous newsletters, PE shirts in House colours will become part of our compulsory school uniform next year, for all children. The PE shirts are screen printed with House names and are available only from the Uniform Shop. Children will be expected to change into their PE shirts and PE shorts (also available) whenever they have sport and physical education.

Solo Taxonomy
As you will be aware, we’ve introduced “Solo Taxonomy” this year. Solo stands for Structured Overview of Learning Outcomes, and, in simple terms, is a process designed to help students achieve deeper thinking. The children are being encouraged- through the five stages or levels of Solo-to state where they are at with their learning, and what to do next to achieve a more advanced level of learning and thinking. We’ve introduced “Solo” as a way in which we can encourage children to become more independent with, and responsible for, their own learning.
