At Botany Downs School, we encourage and support all students to achieve their personal best. Enrichment opportunities are offered across a range of learning areas, including Literacy, Mathematics, and STEAM, allowing students to extend their skills, knowledge, and interests.
ICAS
Senior students have the opportunity to participate in the internationally recognised ICAS assessments in subjects such as English, Mathematics, and Science. These assessments challenge students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills through engaging and academically challenging questions.
Otago Maths Problem Solving Challenge
Selected Year 6 students participate in a series of mathematical problem-solving challenges throughout the year, developing logical thinking, accuracy, and perseverance.
Mathex
Selected Year 5 and 6 students compete in the HPPA Mathex Competition, working collaboratively in teams to solve mathematical problems in a fast-paced environment.
New Zealand Lit Quiz
Selected Year 5 and 6 students participate in the HPPA NZ Lit Quiz, answering questions based on a range of New Zealand literature and authors.
Speech Competitions
Year 5 and 6 students develop public speaking skills through speech writing and presentation as part of their Literacy programme. Finalists compete in the school competition, with selected students representing Botany Downs School at the HPPA Speech Competition. Year 3 and 4 students are introduced to public speaking through oral reading competitions.
Chinese Speech Competition
Students who can confidently read Mandarin or Cantonese may participate in the school Chinese Speech Competition with support from bilingual teachers. Selected students go on to represent the school at the HPPA Chinese Speech Competition.
