Our BEST – Always

Term 3, Week 4 2021

Kia ora koutou,

During Week 4 the Year 5 and 6 students are visiting the museum. The bus bay will only need to be closed on Wednesday and Thursday for the buses in the morning. We begin our ICAS Exams this week, starting with English which was held today.  Hopefully our HPPA Cross-country will be able to go ahead tomorrow and also our HPPA soccer days on Wednesday and Thursday.  The HPPA Netball Day will be on Friday. All the very best to our runners and sports teams.

We are pleased to be able to replace our weekly Special Terrific Person certificates with a new updated Botany Best Award. The Botany Best Award will still be given out each week and the certificate now reflects our school by incorporating our tree, stream and Botany colours.  We have included our school vision “Our Best Always” and the “Botany BEST Award” identifies our BEST = B=Beliefs, E=Excellence, S=Skills and T=Thoughtfulness.

Congratulations to the following children who will be receiving their Botany Best Award and Values Bookmark at school assembly on Friday, starting at 9.10 am.  This week our item will be Room 13 with their Samoan language learning and songs – we welcome you to attend.

SCHOOL NEWS

Year 1 Museum Trip

On Tuesday 10th August we had an exciting bus ride into the museum to continue our learning about Māori protocol. This included identifying parts of a Marae and gain insight into Māori values and perspectives through artwork and carvings. Here are some pictures of us learning how to enter a wharenui with Whaea Gabrielle and Whaea Amy who we had so much fun with.

Year 2 Museum Trip

Last Wednesday, the Year 2’s enjoyed a wonderful day out at the Auckland Museum.  Our learning focus has been Exploring Tikanga Māori.

In class, we have been learning about components of the wharenui and how they represent the human body. This trip helped cement children’s learning by visiting the wharenui, learning a little more about Māori values and culture through artwork and carvings and, having a go at weaving a tukutuku panel.

Year 3 Auckland Museum Trip

On Monday 9th August the Year 3 team went to the Auckland Museum to learn more about Māori culture.  We felt inspired by our Education session which took place inside the wharenui (meeting house).  We learned how to make a tukutuku panel and were allowed to touch and talk about the different forms of art within this beautiful wharenui, including carvings and weaving.  With the support of our wonderful parent helpers we explored every corner of the museum.  The Year 3 team had a fabulous time!

Kapa Haka

The Kapa Haka are in full swing this term and have been working very hard to learn new waiata and routines. We have 50 keen students  who have signed up to Kapa Haka which is one of the biggest groups we have had. Very exciting!

We would like to say a huge thank you to The Auckland Council for gifting our brand new uniforms, and to the Howick Club for gifting the korowai. The uniforms and korowai are ātaahua (beautiful) and our tamariki are super excited to represent our school in them.

We are very grateful for their generous contributions and support.

Thanks!

The Kapa Haka group will be performing on the 22nd of September at the Senior Cultural Arts evening. Please encourage your child to turn up to every practise so we are well prepared for the night.
